and purple heart eligibility but they won't be awarded unless the shooting is declared a terrorist attack. the defense department considers the shooting to be an incidence of workplace violence. 13 people were killed during the shooting. army major nidal hasan is accused the shooting. police shut down the mall after receiving a report of someone throwing is molotov cocktail into the mall. after three hours of searching the nearby area, police made an arrest. the suspect was questioned by the fbi, atf and county police. they say the entire incident was a bomb scare and was captured animal security video. closing arguments are expected later today in the case against two officers in prince george's county accused of beating a university of maryland student. officers edgal baker and -- reginald baker and harrison are charged with assault and misconduct. the 2010 incident was captured

on video. it happened as students celebrated a basketball win over duke. the video shows the police using their batons to hit a young man while he was on the ground. yesterday, officer harrison testified the man punched another officer and refused to drop an object in his hands. the object turned out to be the young man's cell phone. here's a look at some other things making news now. the boy scouts of america released 20 years worth of secret files on men suspected of child sex abuse. >> ines ferre has the report. >> reporter: the documents contain the names of more than 1200 scout leaders and volunteers accused of child sex abuse between 1965 and 1985. >> the boy scouts knew they had a institution-wide problem with child abuse and didn't take steps to deal with that. >> reporter: the oregon supreme court ordered the boy scouts to release the files. the names of victims and

witnesses were blocked out before the documents were posted online. lawyers who fought to have the files made public accused the boy scouts of covering up sex abuse cases. >> you do not get to keep secrets about hidden dangers to children. period, end of conversation. >> reporter: the boy scouts says the purpose of the files was to get child molesters out of the organization. but abuse victims including tom stuart says the files did not protect them. >> you know i do want to speak for all the victims that can't speak for themselves. you know scouting does have some good points. however, right now it's a very dangerous program for young boys. >> reporter: boy scouts of america president wayne perry admits the organization did not do enough to prevent abuse. >> we have to also remember that was a different time. i will tell you i'm not beginning to defend -- going to defend what might have happened in the context of then to the extent that we fell short of protecting a youth and we did fall short in some instances we're profoundly sorry. >> reporter: perry says the

the unemployment lines got longer last week too. the number of americans applying for unemployment benefits surged to a four month high a sign layoffs may be picking up. but the labor department points to mainly delayed figures coming out of california. "newsweek" will stop printing a weekly magazine. it will go all digital early next year. job cuts are expected but the company didn't give a specific figure. the online publication will be called newsweekglobal and will require a paid subscription. december 31st will be the last pretty edition. >> the question is can the online edition make enough to sustain it after that? >> exactly. so many magazines have played with the concept and never recovered after you know 2008. women, may reach for

inner loop of the beltway. there's an accident before route 355 from overnight a tractor-trailer into a guardrail. now a jackknifed tractor- trailer right behind it. let's take a lack at the mdot camera on the inner loop of the beltway and take a look at the delay. on the inner loop no one is moving here at old georgetown road trying to get to route 355 be all the equipment on the scene and the two tractor- trailers with two separate accidents there. 270 right now is not affects, again this is the inner loop heading eastbound to route 355 and i'll keep you posted on that. northbound connecticut avenue at franklin street some flooding there it looks like. nor beck road over rock creek the water has subsided. some flooding issues there as well. this time to the other side of town. no problems out of southern maryland, route 4, route 5, route 301 everything is looking good and we'll go to the 14th street bridge northbound 395. nice and light this morning. and i'll be back with more on that situation on the north

side at 4:55. back to you guys. in health news this morning a blood test may be able to identify women at high risk of breast cancer up to 20 years before symptoms surface. boston researchers found women with a certain combination of hormone levels in their blood were two times more likely to eventually develop breast cancer. it could one day lead to a common test letting doctors know which women need to be watched closely. a compound in green tea may help some of the women. a small study at columbia university found a green tea extract appears to suppress proteins which fuel cancer cells. doctors say the study was too small to determine if it can prevent breast cancer but larger studies are now being done to find out. a child is sent to the hospital for a concussion. every five minutes. and the numbs are highest during -- numbers are highest during fall sports season. >> recovering takes time and a team effort from parents, coaches and teachers. anita brikman has more new

innovations which are helping everyone. >> reporter: this fall, 14-year- old tyler was hoping this year goes more smoothly than last. a snowboarding accident left him with a concussion and his mom in shock about what recovery would mean for her son. >> i had no idea. i had no idea that he would miss so much -- so many sports and so much of school. it was a month of schoolwork we had to make up. >> reporter: liz's reaction is not uncommon. in fact many teachers are surprised the effects of concussion can linger for weeks. but it's here in the classroom that some feel a team approach can be most effective to helping the kids. >> the doctors are the experts but the educators can really really help get the student through this rough time. >> reporter: to do that a team of specialists at nationwide children's hospital have developed this. a comprehensive tool kit with

information for parents and coaches but also teachers. >> it helps assign roles to each of the members in this process what their responsibilities are. >> reporter: teachers for example can help identify symptoms day-to-day. counselors can help kids by helping them cope and administrators can chart a child's progress. tyler is back to normal and his mom is grateful there's now a one stop guide for dealing with kids and concussions. >> i would love for the coaches to know, for the teachers to know and people that have no idea. >> reporter: anita brikman, 9news now. >> so if your child suffers a concussion be sure to let the school and teachers know and monitor symptoms closely. most of us have probably heard of the home remedy using cranberry juice to fight urinary tract infections? it might take a whole lot of juice to have any effect at all. the latest research review shows women with recurrent
